I am flying my german shep/coolie who is 60lbs for the first time from hawaii to seattle! I just picked up the kennel today and I am taking to the airport to make sure it okay to fly! Any info or any other kennels for air travel would be great!

The Vari-Kennel is fine. I prefer to zip-tie it together as the screws have been known to loosen and drop off.

One thing you need to realize about a plastic crate – a dog can, if scared enough, push out the door. PLEASE drill a small hole in the lip of the plastic on the top and the bottom by the door posts and ZIP-TIE the door closed when you get to the airport. I say this due to two incidents — one, a b*tch who I was picking up at the airport was let loose in cargo — a 7 mile chase after and she’d run the pads off her feet and developed a fear of men (due to the cargo guys chasing and trying to tackle her) and secondly — the top winning Samoyed in 2001, won the 2000 Nat’l Specialty, and was flying home from Eukanuba when he broke open the door to his crate in the plane, crawled into an area without oxygen and died.

Giving water – I’ve found it best to freeze water in a plastic container and zip tie it to the door. The dog has access to water for hours but won’t get wet.

Not even an Internet travel dealer or consolidator can beat these prices.

If you know where you want to go and can leave when the company needs you to, and can travel lightly, air courier travel might be for you. It’s not hard to be an air courier but is a little more involved than paying for a ticket and walking through the gate.

Flexibility is very important when considering the time you’ll have to spend at your destination. Some return tickets will find you above the Earth heading back home after just a day or two, others might permit for a week’s vacation and still others will be open ended, allowing you to choose when you are ready to return. Once the return reservation has been booked, though, you are responsible for catching your flight. If you miss the plane home, you must find your own means of transportation home, whether that means paying full fare for a ticket or renting a car or what have you.

Once you have found a courier company you’d like to consider working for, you will need to tell them which dates and destinations you are available to travel. The more flexible you are here, the more likely you are to be offered the chance to fly nearly free. Should your schedule clear up unexpectedly, you can always call the booking agent and ask for a job over the weekend or week.

The booking agent will either offer you a job when you call in or phone you when one becomes available. At that time, you can inquire about return dates and ticket price. You can then accept or decline the job.

Upon acceptance of the job, you are under a legally binding verbal contract. Many booking agents will require you to sign and fax a written contract soon thereafter, others will ask you to sign one at the airport when you meet.

Check in with the booking or delivery company a few days before your departure. Make sure you know who you’ll meet, when and where you’ll meet and specific instructions about delivery at your destination.

Prior to checking in, meet with the representative and pick up the parcels or documents, as well as your ticket. Check your luggage and keep all paperwork. Should the cargo become lost in transit you may have to prove you did everything you were supposed to do to secure its safe delivery.

Now is the time to start thinking about making air travel arrangements for the holidays. Yes, it’s the middle of August and summer is still in full swing. However, if you know that you are planning to travel for any of the holidays between Thanksgiving and New Years, book your flights soon.

Here’s the temptation many people who are flying around the holidays may have. They take a look at the current airfares in August for their flight for Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas or New Years. They’re high. Airfares are generally higher right now than they have been in years, and airlines charge even more for the peak holiday flights. So people wait to book, hoping that the fares may come down.

However, airlines are flying fewer flights than in years past. Flights get booked up quickly. and they get overbooked. Waiting could mean paying even more for a ticket than the price was in August or it could mean not getting a flight at all.

Here are some tips on booking holiday travel now.

-Shop around for the best deals. Airfare will be pricy for holiday travels, but one airline has got to have the lowest fare. Although air travel needs to be booked soon, there is still time to shop around a bit before you book.

-If it’s possible, be flexible on your travel dates. The three or four days immediately before a holiday and after a holiday have the highest fares. If you can fly on the holiday itself or several days before or after, you are likely to get a lower fare.
-Get seat assignments as soon as possible. It’s getting harder and harder to get a seat assignment when you book your travel, but it’s not impossible. If you can’t get a seat assignment immediately, find out from the airline how to go about doing so before your flight.
-Some airlines allow you to check in 24 hours before a flight online, and you can get a seat assignment then. You can also get seat assignments at the self check-in kiosks many airlines have up to 24 hours before your flight. The other option is to check-in in person as early as possible before your flight and get your seat assignment then.
-The longer you wait to check-in, the likelier you are to not get the seat assignment you want (aisle, window, etc.) or risk getting bumped because the flight was overbooked and you didn’t have a confirmed seat. Since holiday flights are usually overbooked this is a possibility.
-If you are planning on using frequent flyer rewards for holiday travel, look into it now. Many airlines have black out dates for frequent flyer rewards around the holidays. If they don’t have black out dates they may have a very limited number of seats for rewards passengers, and those seats will get filled very quickly. They may be filled already. Realize that there is a possibility you may not be able to use your rewards for your holiday travel.

If you plan carefully now, you can be assured that your holiday air travel plans are secure. You can save your last minutes during the holidays for shopping, not worrying about getting to your destination.
