A BIG amen brother! …
A BIG amen brother!!!!
They might be more …
They might be more advanced but most have the knowledge and don’t know how to use it.
Chet was the best. Not being arrogant just stating the facts. Show me another guitarist that has sold 70 million albums just playing guitar!
At one time in this country people stived to be the best at what they did. Chet accomplished that.
The reason we have these so called artists like 50 cent(1/2 a cent) is because everyone wants to appear so open minded and not call crap for what it is.
this was wicked!!! …
this was wicked!!!
Ain’t we lucky he …
Ain’t we lucky he heard Travis and took guitar to a whole new world. Wonder what would have happened if he stuck with a straight pick.
Then he gave us Jerry and Tommy….
Yep, ol’ Witch …
Yep, ol’ Witch didn’t say much; he got down to bizness on the neck of a gittar. Folks said he could pick just like Check Adkins. Reckomember his rendition of “My Grandfather’s Clock”?
Jethro Burns once …
Jethro Burns once said that Chet never played a recording in his life at anywhere close to his potential. Talk to the A-list players (the 7-figure-a-year session guys) in NY, LA or Nashville, and they will tell you; to this very day, no one can touch Chet. We’re talking about a guy who was banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry in 1949 – long before he was a household name – because the union pickers in Nashville were scared to death of him.
Ol’ Wichita was …
Ol’ Wichita was just as good as that, if anyone remembers Lester “Roadhog” Moran’s Cadillac Cowboys. “Check” was the best.
There’s a clip …
There’s a clip somewhere where you really see him play this. Anyone knows where it is?
Wonderful !!!
Wonderful !!!
If one takes the …
If one takes the time to listen to the music that Chet played (and/or composed) over his lifetime, it’s difficult to imagine a more complete guitarist. Watch him play and it looks deceptively easy, which is far from true.
Listen to this song, and then checkout Waltz for the Lonely, Sails, or Windy & Warm. He inspired everyone from Steve Howe to Tommy Emmanuel to Earl Klugh. To this day, there’s a “Chet Atkins Appreciation Society” in his honor, fostering fresh new fingerstyle artists.
oh my god, this is …
oh my god, this is pure genius!
I saw Chet play …
I saw Chet play this live. I see lots of clips of players “covering” it, but most don’t realize that Chet could play this both ways, Yankee Doodle or Dixie on either the high or low strings, and even switch mid-song. He is simply that much better than the rest of us.
this is simply …
this is simply amazing :~) i used to listen to him and dance when i was about 4. he is the best. :~) simply the best.
I’m not sure a lot …
I’m not sure a lot of classical players could follow him on that improvising trail.
And that;s just my humble opinion, for what it’s worth.
I agree! …
I agree! Technically, a good classical player could nail this. At least the first part with the double melody. I had it down pat myself, once.
But when he gets into that last half where he improvises, well, that’s another story!
I noticed that on a lot of Chet’s tunes. He just knows the fingerboard so well that he can just improvise on any melody. That , to me is what separates the “men from the boys.”, knowhutimeen?
Any good classical …
Any good classical fingerstyle player worth his salt could play it. Not that I’m criticizing Chet. he was world class and one of my favorites.
I worked on it for …
I worked on it for a long time, back when record players had needles. I wore the needle out, (and the record) but I finally figured the dern thing out!
Don Felder, …
Don Felder, formerly of the Eagles, wrote in his book “Heaven and Hell” about hearing Chet do this number soon after Don took up the instrument himself when he was about 11 yo. He said he spent over a year and many bloody fingers figuring out how to do it. Said he finally gave up one night and woke up the next morning knowing how to do it perfectly. Now that I got to hear it I can see why it took Don so long to play it. WOW!!!
WoW, thats all
WoW, thats all
Well, you can be …
Nevertheless, Chet kicks ass.
Well, you can be talking about metal and about “metal”. There are some true virtuosos in metal, though most limit themselves to extreme speed in picking and sweeping. I’d say, this isn’t about leagues, it’s more about categories or preferences of guitar players
Amen!!
True. Chet …
Amen!!
True. Chet was in his own league. There was only ONE Mr guitar. Chet was the undisputed master.
He simply stood head and shoulders above the rest.
LOL@people thinking …
LOL@people thinking metal guitarists are in Chet’s league. Aliens dropped Chet off for us to enjoy. Simply THE best.
I had the …
I had the arrangement down pat once, but I’m probably a bit rusty now…
My Uncle tried for …
My Uncle tried for years to teach me how to play that without much success. My uncle passed away a few years ago and I decided if he and chet could play it so could I unless they had more than five fingers on each hand. Something my uncle said kept ringing in my head, Think of it as one song. I finally did and i finally learned it in homor of chet and my uncle. Thanks for posting it brings back memories
