Riddle me this Yankee Doodle?

Why does Yankee Doodle put a feather in his hat? And why does he call the two macaroni. I know that it rhythms with pony. So any other answers welcome. Please. Thank you.

Doodle is thought to mean "fool" or "Simpleton"

Macaroni wigs were popular in the 1770’s and became slang for foppishness.

"The implication of the verse was therefore probably that the Yankees were so unsophisticated that they thought simply sticking a feather in a cap would make them the height of fashion"
