what did yankee doodle call macaroni?

the rhyme goes…
yankee doodle went to town riding on a pony, stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni
so what did he call macaroni? my opinion is that i think its feather but my brother doubt’s me he says it could be a snake for all we know lol

The feather was called macaroni.
Macaroni was a contemporary slang for foppishness..In other words the singer implied that the Yankees were so unsophisticated that they thought sticking a feather in a cap would make them the height of fashion.
