There’s another shorter version on my facebook page. There are apparently various theories about the tune name. I don’t know what the deal is, but it’s a great tune. I remember well being freaked out in kindergarten when a counselor of some kind took us one by one into the other room and asked us to sing Yankee Doodle and play with blocks. I guess it was a diagnostic thing of some kind. It’s a bit of a red herring and you may find it hard to believe, but I’ve met two bilingual children in different decades who got a note home suggesting they may need to be put on ritalin because they didn’t know the English word “spatula.”

Here in the southland frail is a verb. My dad used to say ” I’ll frail the out of you” But he also frailed a banjo and the occasional arrestee/suspect.

Love your playing. How is your banjo tuned for this song?
The tune “Thehos …
The tune “Thehos Gendar” comes out of the 1777fife manuscript of Giles Gibbs, a Revolutionary War fifer. According to J. A. Leo Lemay’s “The Origins of Yankee Doodle,” “Thehos Gendar” is a phonetic spelling of another tune, possibly “The Horse Gen d’armes” or “The Horse Grenadier.” He believes so since another tune on the same page, “The Bonny Lass of Aberdeen,” is spelled “The Boney…”

All these posts are …
All these posts are really interesting. Thanks. It’s interesting that frailing may still be less a word than “blogoshphere” according to conventional wisdom. I play tunes till I get tired of them, and if I’m in the mood I play them till I get into them again and then for a while after that. Even if the Thehos and Gendar referred to in the name aren’t people it’s a nice figure. The sun and sand dollar both look circular. I wonder if defenestrate has ever been used in a real sentence? Spatula…..

where’s my Webster’s 3rd, Collegiate doesn’t enter frailing… frailing?…
How do you know how …
How do you know how many times to repeat the tune? Is it just how a person happens to be feeling that day?
Yeah, and how about …
Yeah, and how about “defenestrate”? Meaning “to throw out of a window.” Meaning that that attitude of the counselors to try to find pathology where there is none should be defenestrated.
I like this tune, however.
Er, Thehos and …
Er, Thehos and Gendar are German names. An obscure (obscure to us, anyway) choral composer/conductor named Adam Thehos was active in Germany in the 1930s.
MAYBE, just MAYBE, Thehos Gendar was an Englishman lampooning England’s Hanoverian monarchy??? I’m suggesting this because some sources say the tune was around in the 1740s and had nothing to do with the Rev War. Just a Brown Bess shot in the dark, folks!

I’ve always loved the name of this tune! Did you snag this from the Giles Gibbs fife manuscript?
